Common Questions

What is a lactation consultant?

A board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) is a healthcare professional with specialized training in breastfeeding and lactation support. IBCLCs are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and have met rigorous educational and clinical experience requirements. They provide expert guidance and assistance to breastfeeding parents facing challenges such as latching issues, low milk supply, or breastfeeding complications. IBCLCs work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, and private practice, to help families achieve their breastfeeding goals through evidence-based care and support.

Does my insurance cover anything?

Typically, yes! I am partnered with a “middle-man” billing service. They handle all the paperwork with your insurance, and if approved, you are covered at no out-of-pocket costs! You will receive an EOB, but that is not a bill. As long as your insurance stays current and correct once approved, you will never pay. Please click here to check your benefits.

Do I have to wait until my baby is here to have a visit?

No! Actually, it’s best to be seen PRIOR to baby being born so we can establish a relationship and answer any questions you may have before the little one arrives. We can review any products needed, breast pump supplies and flange fitting, basic infant feeding questions and what to expect in those first few days! The first few days, in my opinion, sets the tone for the rest of your journey.

What are the benefits of having a lactation consultant?

Hiring lactation consultants aids breastfeeding parents with personalized help and advice for latch, milk supply, pain, and challenges. Consultants offer emotional support, evidence-based info, and tips for success in breastfeeding journey.

What to expect at your visit

BEFORE

First of all, DO NOT clean your house or feel the need to “prepare” for this consultation. My house was messy for sure during my postpartum period. Your time is dedicated to taking care of you and baby. I do not expect otherwise. Complete your profile on my client portal when you receive the email that your appointment is booked. Then you will receive intake forms to review and fill out. Sign your consents and you’re done!

DURING

We will briefly review your intake forms and go over any initial concerns. I will observe a feeding session, provide guidance on positioning and latch, and address any concerns you may have regarding milk supply or feeding difficulties. It is best to observe a feed where you normally do so. Couch? Bed? Chair? Nursery? That way I can assess and help for you to be successful when I am not there. This includes any feeding support pillows.

This includes a pre feeding weight and post feeding weight so we can evaluate milk transfer. We can review your pump, make sure you are using the proper flange size, and observe a bottle feed if requested/needed.

AFTER

A personalized care plan will be developed to support you in meeting your breastfeeding goals. If requested, a copy of our visit report will be sent to your provider / pediatrician. Keep in contact with me to see how things are going after. Reach out for any help & pointers. A follow up may be needed to continue to improve concerns, and evaluate effective milk transfer.

CAN MY PARTNER ATTEND?

YES! Bring on the village! Their involvement can provide additional insight, support, and encouragement for you. Including a support person can help ensure a holistic approach to addressing any lactation concerns and enhance the overall feeding experience for the whole family. Often times, they are unsure how best to support us. Partners need education too!
